The Kershaw Ken Onion Boa 1580 is one of the best knives designed by Ken Onion for Kershaw. It has and elegant design, a remarkable assisted opening device, excellent materials, it is made in the USA, and Kershaw back it up with a limited lifetime warranty. Without doubt, the Boa is an excellent knife for utility purposes.
The knife features a recurve blade made of S30V stainless-steel, a high quality steel that can hold its edge for a relatively long time and has a good resistance to corrosion. The main problem with this type of steel and blade geometry is that it is a little harder for sharpening, so a high quality knife sharpener is in order to maintain its edge.
The handle is lightweight, made of anodized aluminum, and the design provides a very comfortable grip in your hands.
The highlight of Kershaw Ken Onion Boa is the SpeedSafe assisted opening device. It features a torsion bar that helps to open the blade after a manual push on a thumb stud or a pullback on the blade protrusion. The blade opens fast and smoothly and locks with a satisfying click into position. They call it SpeedSafe because the mechanism prevent that the blade will open by accident when closed. Changing the thumb stud allows to use the Boa by both left- and right-handers.
Besides the Boa comes with a locking liner to lock the blade into position after the knife is deployed to further safety. And a practical pocket clip to wear it on your pants.
All in all, the Boa 1580 is an excellent pocket knife by Kershaw and Ken Onion, a good deal for the price.
